Mrs. Munk's Root Beer Experiment - Google Forms/AnswerGarden

Proposed Project Summary
We have been learning about chemical and physical changes in class. We will do an in-class activity to observe the chemical change of carbonation in root beer. Before the activity begins, the students will think of examples of chemical or physical changes and submit their ideas to the Answer Garden I have prepared  using their iPads. We will discuss the answers as a quick overview. Then the students will be grouped in four or five, each getting a liter of a different brand of root beer. They will answer questions about the activity and physical/chemical changes on the Google Form throughout the activity.

What is the BIG idea I want my students to walk away with?

I want my students to internalize the difference between chemical and physical changes. With this activity they will be able to see what one chemical change can do and gain a better understanding of how these changes affect our lives. By using AnswerGarden and the Google Form, they will be engaged with the project and collaborate with their group members using their technology.

Statement of Need (Why does this project need to be done)

This project is important to understand the subject matter we have been studying in a fun way and allows the students to use technology to aid in their observations.

Science - Grade 5

Standard 1:
Students will understand that chemical and physical changes occur in matter.
Objective 3:
Investigate evidence for changes in matter that occur during a chemical reaction.

Educational Technology - Grades 3-5
Standard 7

Use telecommunications and on-line resources (e.g., email, online discussions, web environments) to participate in collaborative problem-solving activities to develop solutions or products for audiences inside and outside the classroom. (4, 5)

Go here to see the Time Telling Sheet!

Proposed Project Summary

My students will print the google docs sheet off at home and mark what time they do certain activities. They will mark time using analog and digital clocks, marking AM or PM. The students will then write about one of their favorite family activities and mark the time it happens. They will return their sheets in class and we will collect and make a book from their favorite activities. Once the sheet is filled out, students will create a documentary of their favorite family activity; they will take pictures of their family activity, create a movie and present it in class.

What is the BIG idea I want my students to walk away with?

I want my students to have better understanding of telling time and see that it applies to their life.

Statement of Need (Why does this project need to be done)

Telling time is an essential skill needed in life and this activity will help my students break down telling time in a way they can relate to and will remember.

Mathematics - Grade 1

Domain: Measurement and Data
Standard 1.MD.B: Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.

Educational Technology - Grades 3-5

Standard 5:
Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom. (3, 4)

Mrs. Munk's 2nd Grade Science - Pinterest Board

Click here to go to the Pinterest Board!

Proposed Project Summary

I will use a Pinterest Board while preparing lessons to promote productivity and creativity in the classroom. I will use activities from my Board in the classroom as well as find teaching helps. I may share various videos, etc. from the Pinterest Board in my classroom.

What is the BIG idea I want my students to walk away with?

I want my students to feel that science is fun and applies to their lives. By using the Pinterest board, I can easily find exciting and fun lessons and can even include my students in my search. I could have them help me find things they would like to do or would be interested in, teaching them how to be involved in their education.

Statement of Need (Why does this project need to be done)

Pinterest is a great tool to share ideas and knowledge. This project allows me to find better ways to teach to the specific interests and needs of my students as well as to share activities and information I find with my students.

Science - Grade 2
Standard 2: Earth and Space
Students will gain an understanding of Earth and Space Science through the study of earth materials, celestial movement, and weather.

Educational Technology - Grades 3-5
Standard 4:
Use general purpose productivity tools and peripherals to support personal productivity, to remediate skill deficits, and to facilitate learning throughout the curriculum. (3)
